Chapter Ten

“If ye are handed the sword of leadership, accept the blade without uncertainty.” ~MacFhearguis Motto

Narrowing his gaze, Alex peered through the thicket of bushes and trees, their limbs heavy with snow. The weak sunlight appeared to be fighting the clouds overhead. He scratched the side of his chin. “Are ye certain this path leads to the home of the healer?”

Aine dismounted from her horse. “And for the second time, aye! We shall lead the horses on through the narrow trail.”

He swept her a skeptical glance. “The snow is heavy. There are nae markings to assure us this path is leading us in the right direction.”

“Sweet Mother Danu,” grumbled Aine. Shaking out her cloak to rid the garment of snow, she waved a hand toward herself. “Remember, half-Fae.”

Her lips held a firm pout—a tempting feast for Alex. However, he remained sitting on his horse.

“Why are ye staring at me?” Aine peered down at her cloak. “Aye, I’m covered in wet mud, but soon the warm comforts of Glenna’s home shall make all right.” Her teeth began to chatter while she stomped her feet to rid more slush from her boots.

An icy blast of wind smacked across Alex’s face. Swiftly dismounting, he strode to her side and lifted Aine into his arms.

“Stop!” she protested, squirming to get out of his hold.

“Ye are shaking from the harsh weather. Do ye want to risk becoming ill with a fever?” scolded Alex.

Aine tweaked his nose with her fingers. “Ye are chilled yourself.”

He winked at her. “Nae. My body is verra warm.”

She gaped at him like a forlorn fish, and Alex chuckled softly.

Aine quickly snapped her mouth closed. “The co…cold does not bother ye?”

“Not with ye in my arms,” confessed Alex.

Her smile came slowly, weaving a charm of beauty around her.

What have ye done to me, Aine? Each time I look into your jeweled eyes, I find myself lost. As if the ground collapsed under me.

“We have already been traveling for an hour on our horses. How much farther?” he asked, tearing his gaze away toward the animals.

“Through the trees,” she supplied.

After giving a sharp two-burst whistle to the horses, Alex proceeded forward with the animals plodding behind them. He ducked under one of the branches. A large clump of snow landed on top of him. He shook his head to rid himself of the icy mixture.

The woman in his arms burst out in laughter. “If ye do not put me down, I fear ye will be covered in more snow, along with drenching me.”

Content to keep his focus on the narrowing path, he disagreed. “Nae, must keep ye warm.”

“Ye have already taken away the chill inside me.”

When Alex refused to comply to her demand, more snow covered his head, sliding down the back of his neck. Muttering a curse, he made his way slowly onward. “How far do the lands extend?”

“As far as we wish,” clarified Aine. “There are nae boundaries in our world.”

“And this veil between my world and yours? Is it nearby?” he asked, trudging through more trees heavy with the recent snowfall.
